When Pastors Don't Do Their Homework...

Brilliant:

"For many Christians, cultural engagement is nothing more than taking whatever the world dishes up, and then trying to find a verse or two to decorate it with. It is like science fair projects in many Christian schools. Do the astronomy project, set up the display board, and then at the last minute try to find a verse with stars in it." - Doug Wilson

Thanks to BTW

It's a shame when what Wilson describes happens as pastors do this when copying and pasting other pastors' sermons for the sake of "cultural engagement". How in the world could Jesus be happy about this?

Thanks for posting Wilson's comment. It's good stuff. If you liked it, you might be interested in a book named Resident Aliens, by Hauerwaus and Willimon.

I wonder, though, if it is such a bad thing when a pastor copies another. Perhaps I don't understand what you're getting at, so let me know if I'm off track, and bear with my circumspect path to the point.

The other day a friend of mine was talking about the passage in I Corinthians in which Paul reprimands believers for following him or Apollos over Christ. My friend compared the passage to Christianity in America: some follow John Piper, some followed Jerry Falwell, some follow the writings of CS Lewis... you get the picture.

So, moving from a negative example to a positive, in the same way that we may follow a pastor or public Christian figure too much, might we not also follow a public Christian pastor appropriately. Leaving alone whether Piper, or Lewis, or Wallis, or Bell, or Driscoll are apostles, some of what they say is truth.

In this way (perhaps not the way you mean), could this be a good "copy and paste" -- that many Christians hear solid teaching from a respected and trusted Christian "authority?"
